Works by Villa-Lobos, Mehmari and Françaix

The trip by Heitor Villa-Lobos in Paris in the decade of the 20s is seen as crucial in its production. In the French capital would contact the main aesthetic trends of the time, would have the opportunity to disseminate their work in this center of cultural radiation, as well as further influences on his career would be crucial, especially the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. On April 9, 1924, French composer Jean Wiener, organized in Paris a concert at the Salle des Enseignants, in which his works scheduled, Milhaud, Stravinsky and Villa-Lobos, including the world premiere of Trio for Oboe, Clarinet and bassoon.
The Brazilian anthropologist Paulo Renato Gueri, in a book about the composer, discusses the date of 1921 for this piece that appears in the catalog of works by Villa-Lobos. “The relationship of the Trio with elements of Stravinsky’s aesthetics is clear: emphasis on brief motifs that are rhythmic and non-melodic, rhythmic inconstancy, with a result quite contrary to that obtained with musics using the Impressionist techniques of Debussy”. For Gueri, although Villa-Lobos knew in 1920 the Russian composer, influenced the author of the Rite of Spring in the production of his Brazilian counterpart emerges only after his trip to France. Paris also is related to the Fantasy Concertante, later work was written by Villa-Lobos in Paris in 1953, commissioned by the American pianist Eugene List and his dedicated. Anyway, the piece would only be released posthumously, in Rio de Janeiro (1968), Jose Botelho (clarinet), Noel Devos (bassoon) and Ivy Improta (piano).
For Taraste Eero Finnish musicologist, Fantasy is among the best works of the late period of Villa-Lobos, which find a balance between form and matter. The excessive length that so often characterizes his works, was here avoided. Also influenced by Stravinsky, the work of Jean Françaix, celebrated for its refinement, elegance and humor present in scores as the Piano Concerto (1936), and Bright Trio for Strings (1933). His Divertissement for Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon was composed in 1947 for the Trio André Dupont.
The third composer presented on this CD, André Mehmari, is characterized by the ease with which similar moves in the fields of popular and concert music. An example of this popular game with the universe is the Short Choro choro works like a typical, as ABACA, with a fantasy of introduction in which the bassoon plays 7-string guitar in the traditional set of choro. Part C is traditionally a very contrasting woolly and full of personality. Here, these features are emphasized and amplified in various musical parameters, explains Mehmari. He adds, this woolly, at times very humorous promotes a dialogue between modern music of Stravinsky with the sign of the traditional choro, one of the richest genres of Brazilian music.
